7 Steps to Resolving Anger in the Moment

In a world filled with turmoil, detainment, war, and strife, ANGER is felt, seen, and heard. From personal undertones to big megaphones, the tension is in the air.

WHY IS THIS TRUE?

Anger is often a reaction to perceived threats, frustrations, or injustices. It can arise with feeling mistreated, wronged, or when expectations are not met.

While anger can motivate people to address issues and correct injustices, it can also lead to aggressive behavior, poor decision-making, and damaged relationships if not managed properly.

USE these 7 Steps to Resolve Anger in Any Moment

  1. Pause: Interrupt Your Bodily Action Before You React

When you cease your movements, this physical reaction interrupts the automatic “fight” response.

  1. Breathe: Take a deep slow breath

Your nervous system will calm and your slow breaths will reset your body’s “fight or flight” reaction.

  1. Step: Literally, take a step back or mentally do so if  you can’t remove yourself entirely.

By immediately adjusting or removing yourself from the situation, you gain the safety you need.

  1. NAME: Speak to yourself or outloud the message of your reality behind the feeling.

If you desire to gain control, name the core feeling.

  1. QUESTION: Instead of casting blame, ask yourself what’s really going on.

Ponder what this moment is about and assess whether your body is tired, hungry, or triggered.

  1. IDENTIFY: Further, examine what you need.

Do you need to feel heard, considered, or space in the moment? Respond with a goal in mind instead of reacting with pain?

  1. CHOOSE: Turn your anger into a strength.

Based on your character, will you be proud of your response later or sad? Think through whether this action will move you towards peace or into more conflict.

During any moment of distressing anger, name the truth of the situation, choose the best option, and strive to have a better interaction than before. Lastly, meditate on these steps and practice before the real life situation shows up.
